Our Dentist Advice
One of the most important health procedures is the simplest one - the dental check-up. Having regular dental check-ups will ensure your teeth remain in top condition well into old age, because any decays can be caught and filled before the problem gets out of hand. The same goes for other dental problems such as crooked, cracked or broken teeth. If these problems are found and corrected when they first start it saves time, cost and the health of the patient.
Dental decay is a fact of life for most people. The food we eat and how we clean - or don’t clean - our teeth, are contributing factors to our general health. Sweet food causes bacteria to grow and bacteria means plaque. Plaque builds up and if not cleaned off regularly hardens into tartar that needs a dentist to grind it off. If tartar is left untreated, then gum disease results and the outcome is loss of teeth. Having diseased or no teeth really impacts on health, because it means we cannot eat the kinds of foods such as fruit and vegetables, which are good for us.
To help protect your teeth your Melbourne dentist advises using a soft toothbrush and brushing at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. Flossing should be done once a day and the tongue should be cleansed gently to prevent bacteria from building up. Sugary drinks and sweets should be restricted and the teeth cleaned directly after eating them. If children drink sweet drinks, encourage them to use a straw so that the liquid is not washed constantly through their teeth.
